Lost cat mysterious circumstances

Our precious indoor/outdoor cat hasn’t come inside for about a day and a half and his collar AirTag is pinging about 5 miles from us! We went over to the apartment building where the AirTag is but it was 10:30 at night. Did someone steal our cat? Have run all the tragic car accident circumstances through our heads but only a couple care parked near where the AirTag is and no pings there, clearly seems to be at the apartments. We are located near Santa Clara university but in SJ in the complex next to Newhall park, and Fruity’s AirTag is at 99 vista Montana, a 6 floor apartment building. Going to post flyers and knock on doors but just hoping for a Hail Mary for advice on this weird situation or info from someone who’s seen our sweet boy.
