Penguin/Ice Slides at Roland Park

Searching Lost Baltimore May 13, 2026
In an effort to take care of my fracturing mental health, in these, once again, unprecedented times, I took my husband and dog to Lake Roland to touch grass, or touch snow, as it were. I was thrilled to see that, in general, the snow still looks fresh, albeit covered with a very thick sheet of ice, but this meant a phenomenal opportunity for a penguin slide. So why do I bring this up? A fantastic question. Maybe you, dear reader, also need a break. The endless doomscrolling. Being stuck inside the house all week, maybe even, god forbid, with kids. You don't even have to dig out your car! Lake Roland is accessible by light rail! So many of the city hills have been well trodden, or worse, dog trodden by dogs with horrible owners, and you have been looking for a good hill opportunity. Maybe you're an adult man who weighs upward of 150+ and you've been worried about finding a good ice hill that can take your weight. Well, friend, this is your moment. You spent this past week protesting ICE and now you want to have fun on ice because irony is not lost on you! Carpe diem! Taking care of your mental health and finding joy in this incredibly fucked up world that wants to keep you in a spiral of anxiety is also a form of resistance. So if any of this speaks to you, maybe it's time to get yourself to the park and slide down some ice. Anway, now back to my regularly scheduled doom and gloom.
