PACC is OVERCROWDED again! Please help!
PACC asks Tucson community to help reduce overcrowded shelter as dogs face deadlines TUCSON, Ariz. (KVOA) - Pima Animal Care Center (PACC) is urging the community to help alleviate dangerous overcrowding at its facility on Silverbell. With 593 dogs currently in their care, PACC is resorting to temporary pop-up kennels and doubling up dogs in kennels, which can create safety concerns for staff and animals. “Simply put, we are out of room,” Steve Kozachik, PACC Director, said. “Virtually every kennel at PACC is currently housing two dogs. That is a safety issue for our staff and volunteers, and it is not fair to the animals.” Kozachik emphasized the importance of the public holding onto healthy, friendly stray pets and assisting in finding their owners. About 70 percent of PACC’s annual intake consists of stray dogs that likely have homes, according to a press release. The dogs are usually housetrained and have microchips without updated information. “If a member of the public finds a friendly, healthy stray dog during this time, they are encouraged to check for a tag with a phone number, hang onto the pet, put up flyers, and talk to neighbors,” Kozachik said. PACC said they are prioritizing emergency cases over found healthy strays and is encouraging the public to locate owners first. They have also created a list of large dogs with detailed descriptions to help adopters and fosters. Friends of PACC is offering $5 a day for fostering dogs weighing 40 pounds or more, up to $70 for two weeks, until Nov. 26. Additionally, the Pet Support Team is working to provide resources to keep pets with their owners. To further reduce the census, PACC will post a list of 20 dogs at risk of euthanasia if not adopted soon, based on medical, behavior notes and length of stay. All dogs at
