Need help finding new resources for my dog

I need help with one of my dogs. I have 2, one I adopted on purpose and one that was left with me. I need help with the one that was left. I have come to the hard conclusion that I am not the best owner for him. He needs someone who can give him the activity levels, mental stimulation and grooming requirements that he needs. However, I’m not looking to just take him to the shelter or a rescue because he’s not abused or abandoned because he doesn’t deserve that. What I’m looking for is other suggestions. Approximately 5 yrs ago, my ex-husband and I “rescued” the 1-2 yr old Australian shepherd (Kody) from his son (my stepson) when he asked if we would keep him for 3 months when he was moving apartments. Stepson basically abandoned Kody and when ex and I split 2 yrs ago, he couldn’t take Kody with him. So now I’m taking care of him and will continue doing so until a better situation can be found. Kody is super protective over me and doesn’t allow anyone to come near me at home. This included my ex when we were together. Now he barks at my son who lives with me if he walks into the room. I recognize that he’s “protecting his herd”, but I don’t need protecting in my own home! He herds me through the house. He needs a “job” that isn’t me. He is fixed and has all his shots. Im open to suggestions. But I’m not the right human for this dog. I don’t have the right energy levels or what he needs. Roast me if you want, but I have his best interests at heart.
