Humane Society of Greater Dayton Removes 137 Animals from Home

Searching Found Dayton May 13, 2026
Yesterday, the Humane Society of Greater Dayton removed 137 animals from a single residence after discovering extremely poor and unsafe living conditions. What our team found inside was heartbreaking. In total, we rescued: • 92 guinea pigs • 33 chinchillas • 5 cockatiels • 4 rabbits • 1 frog • 1 hamster • 1 dog Inside the home, animals were living among severe rodent and insect infestations. Cockroaches were scattering all along shelves as mice scurried under our feet. Many cages had no hay, and numerous water bottles were completely dry. Our team ultimately removed 99 cages from the home. Several of the guinea pigs were suffering from lice infestations, and many other animals had severely overgrown nails as well as other additional health concerns that our veterinary team is now carefully assessing and treating. Right now, these animals are safe in our care and receiving the medical attention, nutrition, and support they desperately need. Cases like this are often more complex than they appear. Animal hoarding is frequently connected to mental health challenges. That’s why the Humane Society of Greater Dayton has a licensed social worker on staff who works alongside our team. Our goal is not only to protect animals, but also to help connect people with resources and support before situations escalate to this level. This case is open and pending, with a seizure hearing scheduled for March 17th in Dayton Municipal Court, which will determine permanent custody of the animals. HOW YOU CAN HELP: Caring for this many animals requires significant medical treatment, food, housing, and daily care.
