Sharing my adoption experience with New York Meow Sanctuary in Flushing
I wanted to share my adoption experience in case it helps others. Last December I lost my rescue dog of 14 years. Recently I felt ready for another companion and found New York Meow Sanctuary on Petfinder. On Aug 24, I met a man named Jason there. The cat I came to see had biting issues, so he suggested I go to a volunteer’s apartment where she kept many cats. In what looked like a one-bedroom full of cats, I found a calm 4-month-old kitten and decided to adopt him. I paid $175 adoption fee + $100 delivery, and the plan was to take him after his neutering in mid-September. On Sep 11, I got a text saying the kitten had feline panleukopenia (FPV). The vet recommended euthanasia due to pain and only 20% survival. I agreed, but that was it. No real explanation, no sincere apology, no closure. Later I learned he’d only had his first vaccine and wasn’t fully vetted before being placed for adoption. When I asked for clarity and at least an apology, I was told they had “nothing to apologize for.” I never asked for my money back (I even donated $500 to another cat’s surgery). All I wanted was honesty and compassion. After losing my dog, this was emotionally devastating. If you’re considering adopting from New York Meow Sanctuary, please ask for full medical history and be very clear on what care has (or hasn’t) been done. I still believe in rescue work, but adopters deserve transparency and empathy too.
